Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission officially ended its inquiry into the case of Chhaya Rani Goswami. The 90-year-old resident of Kailashahar in Unakoti district had been incorrectly flagged as dead within the UIDAI system. This digital error cut off her access to ration benefits for nearly a year. Her son discovered the mistake when he noticed her name vanished from their family ration card.

Justice Arindam Lodh led the commission in a suo motu probe following a February 14, 2026, newspaper report. The commission ordered the Unakoti District Magistrate and Collector to investigate the matter. Investigators confirmed Goswami is alive and still eligible for benefits under the National Food Security Act. Her ration access failed because the system blocked ePOS verification after marking her as deceased.

Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bipul Das represented the local government during the hearing. He stated that the administration sent all necessary paperwork to the UIDAI regional office in Guwahati to restore her status. Das noted that the administration had sought clarification from UIDAI regarding the incorrect deceased status but had not received a satisfactory response. While her rations stopped, the commission noted that her social security pension remained untouched and deposited into her bank account.

The THRC determined a technical glitch caused the false death record rather than administrative negligence. With her Aadhaar status moving toward restoration, the commission shuttered the case.
