Tripura Chief Minister Vows to Implement Uniform Civil Code

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha confirmed Monday that his state will adopt the Uniform Civil Code once the central government issues formal instructions. Saha addressed the policy during a press conference following the Seva Sankalpa Abhiyan event. He noted he learned of the plan through media reports detailing Union Home Minister Amit Shah's goal to roll out the code across 21 BJP-ruled states. The mandate stands. The state will follow suit.

Saha offered a potential carve-out for the state's demographics. When questioned about conflicts with existing customary laws covering marriage and inheritance, the Chief Minister said, "So far I know, the tribal areas may get an exemption from the Uniform Civil Code."

The Chief Minister also weighed in on regional cultural events and social media disputes. He dismissed the idea that West Bengal's recent ban on its Durga Puja carnival would influence Tripura. He framed the local carnival as a strictly celebratory event enjoyed by all residents. Finally, Saha warned against online misinformation regarding the treatment of Manasree Chowdhury, a young girl suffering from SMA type-I. He promised legal action against anyone spreading false propaganda against his administration.
