Itanagar: More than 4,000 runners packed the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium on Saturday for the fourth Oil India Tawang Marathon. The event drew elite competitors from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nepal alongside local fitness buffs and Indian defence personnel. They raced across four categories: a 42.195 km full marathon, 21.0975 km half marathon, 10-km run, and 5-km run. The route sits 10,000 feet above sea level.

This thin air adds heavy strain. Organisers provided medical aid, hydration, and support services to combat altitude risks. Officials including Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu, Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering, and actor Amit Sial watched the action. The Arunachal Pradesh government ran the event with the Indian Army and title sponsor Oil India Limited.

The race aims to cement the state as a top spot for adventure tourism. It links local Monpa culture and the historic Tawang Monastery with the growing physical demands of endurance sports. The marathon also serves a social function. It acts as a bridge between the military and civilians in a border state. As the event grows, it helps hotels, homestays, and transport operators see a clear economic boost. Organisers noted the event serves as a "platform for promoting endurance sports in India's eastern Himalayan region."
