Itanagar: The 5th State Level Archery Championship 2026 kicked off Saturday at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. About 100 archers have gathered to compete across 13 district and Khelo India Centre teams. Winners in these categories secure a shot at representing Arunachal Pradesh at the national level during the five-day event.
Nampong MLA Laisam Simai opened the competition as Chief Guest alongside Guest of Honour Major General Amit Nautiyal, GOC of the 5 Mountain Division. Tawang in-charge Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta also attended the ceremony. Major General Nautiyal praised the state for its archery prowess. He noted that Tawang serves as more than just a tourist site. He told the crowd, "The district is a symbol of India's frontier strength, rich cultural heritage, valour and national pride."
Simai emphasized turning Tawang into a global tourist hub. He pointed to the shift of archery from a tribal hunting practice to a professional sport. The MLA thanked the Indian Army for backing local youth initiatives and fostering tight community bonds. He urged the athletes to maintain focus and discipline throughout the tournament.
Dignitaries also launched the logo for the Tawang Music Festival during the event. That festival starts on 29 October 2026. The championship continues this week to give both new and veteran talent a chance to prove their skills on the field.
