Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu honored the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles today. The battalion finished a 33-month deployment in the high-altitude Mago-Chuna sector of Tawang district. Khandu presented a Chief Minister's Commendation Certificate to the unit as they prepare for their next assignment. The unit navigated three brutal winter seasons on the China border.
Khandu praised their work on social media. "As the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles move on to their next assignment after an outstanding tenure in the Mago-Chuna sector of Tawang, I extend my sincere gratitude for their exemplary service," the Chief Minister wrote on X. He credited the soldiers with bolstering national security and civil-military ties.
The unit's record is deep. They saved 13 civilians after a road wreck at Baisakhi in October 2025. Soldiers ran 49 medical camps for 1,240 people. Under Operation Sadbhavana, the battalion built community halls and installed solar street lights. They also supported local schools and handed out winter supplies to graziers.
The soldiers worked on environmental and tourism projects. They planted 986 saplings to restore the high-altitude landscape. The unit organized the Shangri La Calling Festival, the Tulung La Bike Rally, the Yak Mela, and Losar celebrations. They improved Gongkar La Lake for tourists and rejuvenated the Chhetri War Memorial. Col Y Romen Singh and his troops leave behind a legacy of integrated security and development.
