Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu awarded the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles a commendation certificate this week. The unit spent 33 months in the high-altitude Mago-Chuna sector of Tawang district. They faced three harsh winters there. The battalion is now moving to a new assignment.
Khandu praised the unit on X for its work on national security and local relations. He said, "The battalion's integrated approach to security, development and humanitarian service has left a lasting legacy in Arunachal Pradesh and significantly strengthened civil-military relations in the border region."
The soldiers did more than watch the border. They saved 13 civilians after a road wreck at Baisakhi in October 2025. The unit ran 49 medical camps that helped 1,240 people. They also finished welfare projects under Operation Sadbhavana and planted 986 trees. Tourism got a boost too. The battalion developed Gongkar La Lake and pushed border events like the Shangri La Calling Festival, the Tulung La Bike Rally, the Yak Mela, and Losar celebrations.
