Kohima: Sapotimi village held its first Chilli Festival on July 17. The event centered on the theme, Let’s Celebrate Our Spice, Our Pride. It was sponsored by the Nagaland Department of Horticulture. The celebration showcased the village's progress in sustainable farming and chilli cultivation.
Dr. Along Tzudir, the Zunheboto District Horticulture Officer, served as the special guest. He praised the local farmers for their discipline and grit. He told the crowd, "The village has never disappointed the department; instead, its success has inspired officials to remain even more committed to supporting its agricultural progress." Tzudir promised that the department would keep working with the village to expand their output.
The department adopted Sapotimi as a horticulture village. This partnership began in 2021 when officials named it a Chilli Village. Since then, the department has supplied quality seeds and technical expertise. The villagers switched to a relay cropping system under this guidance. Productivity surged. Farmers now produce enough for their own homes and sell the surplus at market.
Tokugha Sumi, the lead farmer, noted that agriculture has fueled their economy for generations. L. Bendang, Chairman of the Longsa Village Council, attended to show support for his neighbors. He urged the community to keep learning. Tzudir also pushed local youth to see farming as a viable business rather than just survival. He highlighted the potential for tourism in the sector.
Rev. Vitoshe led the invocation. Khekuto Akukau gave the welcome address. Libotoli, the Village Level Officer, offered the vote of thanks. Aloto Y/L provided the benediction. Members of the Farmers Wing NPF Zunheboto Division and the Zunheboto District Tourism Association also attended. The day concluded with an inspection of produce stalls and a chilli feast.
