Kohima: Public Health Engineering and Cooperation Minister Jacob Zhimomi presented the Nagaland Cooperative Policy, 2026, during the 9th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima. The plan outlines a 10-year roadmap to transform the state’s cooperative sector into a self-reliant economic engine. It prioritizes village-anchored ecosystems designed to serve the specific needs of hill communities.
The policy promises a massive support structure. "This system will provide accessible finance, business research and advisory services for marketing, branding, value addition and digital linkages, in collaboration with sectoral development agencies, NABARD, NCDC and Nagaland State Cooperative Bank," the document states. Officials intend to establish at least one Model Cooperative Village in every district, using multipurpose Primary Agricultural Credit Societies to manage everything from credit and input supply to processing and marketing.
Economic clusters will focus on niche items like Naga chillies, large cardamom, indigenous rice, bamboo, mushrooms, honey, and livestock products. The government plans to link these goods with the One District One Product initiative and expand market access through e-commerce, cooperative marts, and international trade fairs. Specialized agencies will assist with branding, packaging, and securing Geographical Indications to protect unique crafts.
Livestock sectors, including piggery, poultry, and dairy, will receive targeted growth support to improve nutrition and provide jobs for women. Fisheries, particularly cold-water varieties, are also slated for development. Furthermore, a new State-level Cooperative Sector Task Force will set firm targets for member outreach and economic growth, conducting regular reviews to ensure the state hits its 10-year goals.
