Kohima: Nagaland officials launched the Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive on September 17. The event took place at the Sub-Divisional Agriculture Office in Baghty, Wokha. Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor for Agriculture, led the ceremony under the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm 2026-27. The state plans to reach 15,000 hectares of cultivation. This effort focuses on fertile foothill regions and cultivable wastelands to protect primary forests.
Yanthan pushed for the initiative to help farmers build sustainable livelihoods. He noted that the government partnered with what he called "highly trustworthy, reputable and legitimate" agencies to ensure success. Farmers can access free planting materials, tools, and maintenance aid for the first four years. Financial support for intercropping is also available before the trees begin fruiting.
Godrej Agrovet will build a processing mill in the state to guarantee a local marketplace for harvests. Yanthan confirmed the land acquisition process is moving forward. "Consultation with Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr Niephiu Rio is under process to earmark 30 Acres of land," he said.
Deputy Director Ronchamo Kikon urged growers to ignore unscientific rumors regarding the crop. Dr. Benjongtoshi Imchen of Godrej Agrovet detailed the marketing potential and financial incentives for participants. The state recently opened new offices in Sanis and Ralan to provide additional support to the region. Following the launch, Yanthan planted a sapling to honor Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday.
