Kohima: The Bharatiya Janata Party shook up its national leadership on August 17. Party President Nitin Nabin appointed S Phangnon Konyak, a Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland, as one of 16 national secretaries. Konyak is the only Nagaland representative in the new roster. She is one of four women in the role, alongside Kavita Patidar of Madhya Pradesh, Sangeeta Yadav of Uttar Pradesh, and Dr. Swadesh Singh of Delhi.
Konyak thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nabin on X for the appointment. She stated, "I look forward to the guidance and support of all our leaders and karyakarta's as we work together for the world's largest political party and for the nation." Nagaland State BJP President Benjamin Yepthomi praised the move as a proud moment for the Northeast. Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton also noted her potential to serve the party and the public.
The shuffle includes 13 national vice-presidents, such as Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Tirath Singh Rawat, Ram Madhav, Baijayant Jay Panda, Sardar Manpreet Singh Badal, and Rekha Verma. Eight leaders secured spots as national general secretaries, including Vinod Tawde, Sunil Bansal, Smriti Irani, and Biplab Kumar Deb. BL Santhosh remains the national general secretary for organization, while Piyush Goyal takes over as national treasurer. Sambit Patra keeps his post as North-East coordinator.
The lineup represents a smaller footprint for Nagaland than in 2020. That year, M Chuba Ao served as vice-president and Mmhonlumo Kikon acted as spokesperson. Kikon left the party in August 2025. In other changes, Deepak Mhaskey replaces Amit Malviya to lead the social media department.
