Shillong: Villagers from Baksalpara in North Garo Hills are calling out PWD officials and a private contractor over a road that is falling apart. The three-kilometer stretch connecting Baksalpara to Bagabata was finished in 2022. MERYL Construction, based in Damas, handled the project. The work cost more than 2 crore rupees.
The project included a budget of over 16 lakh rupees for maintenance over five years. Yet, the road has received zero repairs since its completion. It is a wreck. Residents claim the contractor ignored the deal.
“Ia ramako bilsi bongana kingkingde contractor an·tangan, niroke taridape on·na nanggen ine niamko donahachim indiba kamko ka·gipa contractor, ia niamko ja·rikjaenga. Ia rama da·o obosta namsrangjaengaha aro kamko ka·gipa contractor, ia ramako taridape on·na nangengachim indiba ua changsaba ia ramako taridape on·na dongkujaenga,” the villagers stated. Locals even visited the PWD Executive Engineer office to plead for fixes. The office has done nothing.
