Shillong: Residents of Baksalpara in North Garo Hills are calling out the PWD and a local contractor over a crumbling road. The 3-km PMGSY route links Baksalpara and Bagabata. MERYL Constructions built the road for over Rs 2 crore. It finished in September 2022.
The project included a five-year maintenance deal worth over Rs 16 lakh. This contract runs through September 2027. Despite the timeline, zero repairs have occurred. Major potholes now plague the route. Locals fear the contractor will walk away with the funds. One resident stated, "This is a blatant violation of the terms of contract as it specifies that the road needs to be maintained by the contractor."
Villagers visited the Executive Engineer of the PWD office weeks ago. They filed a formal complaint. The department has ignored the plea. Residents now demand immediate action before the maintenance window closes. They want the road fixed while the contract remains valid.
