Peren and Chümoukedima Lift African Swine Fever Bans

Kohima: Districts in Peren and Chümoukedima finally opened the pork trade. Local administrations scrapped bans on slaughter, import, and transport of pigs. African Swine Fever cases hit a downward trend. The virus prompted the initial restrictions earlier this year.

Peren Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru ended the ban for Jalukie Valley effective July 17. This move reversed an order from April 25, 2026. The Chief Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Officer pushed for the change. Traders must now provide transit challans and quarantine history documents upon request. Vets must also sign off on health certificates. The order states: "Any unusual sickness or death of pigs must be reported immediately to veterinary officials."

Chümoukedima lifted its own restrictions on the same day. Deputy Commissioner Polan John, NCS, replaced a May 25, 2026, order that covered Toulozouma and surrounding villages. A letter from the Chief Veterinary Officer confirmed the zone is disease-free after zero new deaths. Officials will keep running routine surveillance. Any violators face legal consequences. Public compliance remains mandatory for all village councils and vendors.
