Congress Leader Slams Unakoti Hospital Over Patient Deaths and Poor Oversight

Agartala: Congress MLA Birajit Sinha blasted the Unakoti district hospital on Wednesday. He blamed a lack of administrative oversight for failing patients. The veteran legislator says the Chief Medical Officer rarely shows his face at the facility. Staff members even fail to identify their own boss when he stops by.

Sinha pointed to a recent tragedy where a pregnant woman died because no gynaecologist was on duty. He demanded to know why the hospital granted the only specialist leave without finding a backup. Administrators deflected blame when confronted about the staffing gap. "None of the hospital staff knows the Chief Medical Officer. When he visited the hospital along with our workers, the nurses and other officials of the hospital could not even recognise him. This illustrates the sad state of affairs of the services," Sinha said.

The MLA issued a seven-day ultimatum to relocate the labour room to the ground floor. Currently, expectant mothers struggle to reach the unit in the multi-storey building. Officials keep promising a lift but cannot prove that funding exists. Sinha called these explanations unacceptable excuses for dangerous conditions.

He also raised alarms about the new ICU. The physical room is ready, but the equipment is outdated. Even worse, the hospital failed to hire staff trained to run the life-saving unit. The facility remains poorly equipped to handle critical care cases.
