Kohima: STINER-TFC wrapped up a five-day training workshop at the Nagaland University School of Agricultural Sciences in Medziphema. Running from August 29 to September 9, the program taught students how to turn farm waste into cash. Project In-charge Prof Akali Sema led the sessions.
Dr Limasunep and Kingkin Vermicompost owner Sharongmangyang Chang handled the composting module. They showed students how to build commercial units, manage waste, and harvest vermiwash. Chang focused on the business side of the operation.
Project Assistant Bikram Ghimere moved the focus to banana plants. Students learned to harvest pseudostem biomass and extract fibre from the sheaths. The group of 20 turned raw materials into bags, baskets, table mats, tea coasters, and caps. They washed, brushed, and braided the fibre by hand.
Akiya Assumi, the Assistant Registrar, told students to use the university resources to launch their careers. Prof Akali Sema pushed the group to treat skill building as a lifelong task. She told the participants, "explore alternative enterprise opportunities and view skill development as a continuous process."
Students walked away with new technical skills. The workshop aimed to turn young researchers into entrepreneurs. STINER-TFC plans to offer ongoing mentorship for anyone starting a new venture.
