Kohima: Scientists from the Farmers Cell at Nagaland University, School of Agricultural Sciences, visited Sirhi Angami village on September 17. They hosted an on-farm demonstration for 30 local growers in Chümoukedima District. The timing was deliberate. Farmers were prepping fields for the Rabi season.
Dr. Kavi Sumi showed attendees how to treat seeds using Trichoderma. He explained that this fungus fights soil-borne diseases. It ensures crops take root effectively. Participants watched the procedure closely during the hands-on session.
Dr. Sabbithi Pavan used videos and photos to teach pest management. He helped farmers identify beneficial insects that protect crops. He warned against using chemicals before verifying the nature of the bugs. "Farmers were practically shown the procedure and briefed on the role of Trichoderma, a beneficial fungus used for managing seed and soil-borne diseases and supporting healthy crop establishment."
Dr. Ashwini Ananda covered vegetable production and household nutrition. He urged residents to start kitchen gardens to cut costs and boost local supply. He also demonstrated how to build raised nursery beds with correct spacing. The attendees asked questions about managing pests and diseases throughout the event. This was the first demonstration of its kind in the village. Dr. Sentimenla Jamir chaired the session. Dr. Mary N. Odyuo explained the goals of the outreach program.
