Shillong: Sulekha Sen returned to her Nongrim Hills home on August 10 to find her house ransacked. She left at 3 pm and discovered the break-in at 8.30 pm. Burglars took an iPad, an Apple Watch, business equipment, and gold earrings. Sen claims police ignored her initial distress calls. She said: “I called the police multiple times. I was told there was no car and no personnel available. I was also told that there were a lot of big cases going on.”
Police eventually arrived to file a report. Sen struggled to get an FIR registered the next morning. She claims officers dragged their feet on reviewing neighbor CCTV footage. Frustration boiled over when her stolen devices began pinging from an Umpling location. Sen reported the active location to Laitumkhrah Police Station at 5 pm on a Sunday. Officers allegedly told her to return on Monday. She demanded a record of their refusal to help. An officer-in-charge finally deployed personnel to the site.
Sen reports that the officers refused to conduct the search themselves. Instead, they told her to question the residents. The residents denied any knowledge of the electronics. Investigating officer MD Kayo did not join the search. He has provided minimal updates since the theft. Sen insists she does not know if the residents are guilty, but she wants a real investigation.
The victim went public with her story on video. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem intervened following her post. He tasked Additional SP Lovish Garg to oversee the case. Sen met with top officials to discuss her grievances. She expects more consistent work from the department moving forward. Police officials confirmed they are now addressing her concerns at a senior level.
