Shillong: Meghalaya teachers were left off the National Teachers Awards 2026 list entirely. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) wants to know why. Spokesperson Dr. A.W. Rani pointed out that 48 teachers from 27 states, seven Union Territories, and six central government organizations earned honors this year. Meghalaya stood alone as the only state missing from that tally.
The party maintains it does not measure a teacher’s worth by medals or certificates alone. They acknowledge that local educators work under difficult conditions every single day. Even so, the total exclusion of the state points to a breakdown in the nomination process. The VPP is now demanding that the administration review how it screens and puts forward candidates for national recognition.
Rani questioned the government's commitment to its staff. "The complete omission of the state raises serious questions about the nomination process," Rani said. He urged officials to overhaul existing procedures. The goal is to ensure Meghalaya educators finally get a fair shot at competing with their counterparts across the country.
