Imphal: A midnight fire reduced a four-room house to rubble in Kharasom village, Ukhrul, early Friday. The blaze sparked at 1:30 AM. Nganingkhui Zimik and his family were miles away at their fields when the flames took hold. Nobody was home. The remote village lacks fire tender services, meaning the structure stood no chance.

Total losses hit roughly Rs 20 lakh. The inferno consumed the concrete house, a smoothbore breech-loading rifle, clothing, furniture, cash, and an LPG setup. Nothing survived. The family now lives in a neighbor’s vacant house and relies on local charity to get by.

Zimik feeds a wife and five children through his work as a farmer. He said, "The disaster has caused severe economic hardship." The family needs state funds to build a new life and recover their stolen livelihood.
