Arunachal Deputy CM Pushes for River and Biodiversity Protection

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein demanded a unified push to save the state’s rivers, forests, and aquatic life on Friday. He spoke at the second annual Nadi Utsav, an event built to highlight the survival of local water ecosystems. Waterways are the lifeblood of the region. They carry history and define local culture.

Mein emphasized that tribal survival relies on these natural resources. He stated, "The lifestyle of our tribal people is deeply associated with nature, and we have lived with nature for ages; therefore, efforts must be made to protect and conserve the water and forests." His plan targets illegal hunting and fishing while aiming to rejuvenate dried streams.

The festival closed at TaKonmu, also called Tungnamphi at Noichenam, which sits on the Tengapani river. This location serves as a sacred site for the Tai Khamti people. Historically, the area functioned as a vital trade and barter route toward Sadiya. Mein argued that conservation must protect these cultural landmarks just as strictly as the local fish and flora.

The initiative aligns with the environmental vision set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mein believes public support will grow the festival significantly in the future. Attendees included Namsai ZPC Chau Sujana Namchoom, Deputy Commissioner Lobsang Tsering, plus various monks, youths, and community leaders.
