Shillong: Assam officials released a new pictorial guidebook on Thursday focused on rare, endangered, and threatened plants in Northeast India. Narayan Chandra Borkataky, vice-chairman of the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog, debuted the book at his Janata Bhawan office. He called the release an informative resource for the public. The publication, titled RET Plants and Some Common Medicinal Plants of North East India Part II, serves as the second edition of the work.
Rangia College published the book under a project sponsored by SITA. This initiative focuses on the ex-situ cultivation of medicinal plants and the creation of herbal gardens. A garden already sits on the Rangia College campus to support educational and conservation goals. Dhruba Prasad Baishya, co-vice-chairman of SITA, noted the text provides a deeper understanding for researchers and students.
The guidebook documents specific medicinally important species found across the region. Leaders hope the project creates income-generation opportunities through better plant management. Borkataky praised the team behind the effort while emphasizing the need for regional protection. The project aims to spark public awareness about native flora.
