Shillong: The 16th International Shillong Shopping Carnival is underway at Madan Iewrynghep in Laitumkhrah. The event, which runs through September 20, hosts nearly 100 participants from across India, Thailand, Afghanistan, Dubai, Turkey, South Korea, and Singapore. The Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam, which has managed the fair for 24 years, pushed forward despite early regional tensions that threatened to derail the project.
Organiser Das noted that the event helps restore confidence for visiting traders. He stated, “Before it started, there was trouble between the two states. At that time, people were unsure whether it would happen or not.” Despite initial doubts, the venue has seen a steady turnout.
Exhibitors shared varied experiences. Rajeev Dogra of Delhi, a 25-year veteran of such fairs, reported satisfactory sales of hand-painted canvas and flower pots. First-time participant Ahmed Maroof Hotak, who is selling Afghan dry fruits, praised the local business climate. However, My Miang Kunjana, a Thailand-based merchant who has attended for over a decade, noted that shopper enthusiasm has waned compared to earlier years. Kashmir-based trader MD Younis, participating for the sixth time, defended the venue as the best platform for buyers and sellers.
Local visitors offered mixed reviews. While Kabya Borkakoty of Assam appreciated the convenience of seeing diverse products in one place, resident Ibadahun Suting described the inventory as repetitive. She suggested that organizers should recruit vendors from a wider array of nations to stay fresh. The event remains a key link for residents to access international goods like Thai balms and oils that stay absent from traditional retail stores.
