Shillong: Meghalaya is pushing its local goods into global markets. Over 300 entrepreneurs from all 12 districts met with 32 national and international buyers at the second Reverse Buyers Seller Meet in Shillong this Thursday. The two-day event at the State Convention Centre hosts more than 800 structured business meetings. Local firms gain a chance to showcase products and lock in direct deals.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar opened the event. He wants to turn local goods into sustainable export opportunities. The state focuses on agro-products, handlooms, bamboo, and handicrafts. Dhar noted that the previous meet in February generated 40 business agreements worth over Rs 3 crore. Buyers from 15 countries joined that first edition.
Dhar pushed for better branding and quality control for state businesses. He said, "Meghalaya has the products and talent; the challenge is to connect them with the right markets." The government views the state’s 443-km border with Bangladesh as a gateway to South and Southeast Asian trade. Upgrades to road, rail, and air links through Mendipathar and Umroi Airport further support this vision.
Commerce and Industries Commissioner CVD Diengdoh and Director ML Wanshnong attended the kickoff. The state government is currently building policies to provide long-term support for these entrepreneurs. Officials want to move beyond local borders to reach customers across India and the globe.
