Agartala: Banking operations across India ground to a halt Friday. The United Forum of Bank Unions organized the walkout. Employees want a permanent five-day work week. They demand that banks stay closed every Saturday and Sunday.
Tripura felt the sting. Branches in Agartala and across various districts shut their doors tight. Customers could not process loan applications, deposits, or cash withdrawals at physical counters. Digital banking tools and ATMs stayed online. These platforms provided some relief.
Unions claim excessive workloads hurt staff performance. They insist a shorter work week improves long-term service quality and aligns local practices with global standards. Management has stalled for years. Union leaders expressed their frustration regarding the lack of progress on these long-standing issues.
"Our demands are not new. We have repeatedly raised them, but without meaningful progress, we are left with no choice but to protest," union representatives said. The group warns of future escalations. They plan to intensify agitation if officials continue to ignore their requests for reform.
