Shillong: Six masked men abducted three men in a taxi and hauled them to a forest in Mawkasiang late Sunday. The group forced the victims into a vehicle, license plate ML-05-AH-3636, before driving them from Pynthor to their deaths. One victim, 38-year-old Shanbor Ranee of Umkdait, Nongmensong, did not survive. Passersby found his body by the roadside near Larity on Monday morning.
The killers hacked Ranee with a machete, leaving 10 to 12 deep wounds on his neck and back. His face was so badly mutilated that identification proved difficult. The other two victims met different fates. One victim escaped by jumping from the moving vehicle and was later rescued by Border Security Force personnel. Another victim from Mawtawar managed to survive the encounter. Both are currently under medical care at NEIGRIHMS.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the trio was targeted together. "It appears that these three people were together," Syiem said. Investigators are looking into Ranee’s history, which includes prior charges under the NDPS Act and a murder case. Police haven't ruled out a connection to drug rackets or a personal vendetta. The investigation is ongoing. No suspects are in custody.
Authorities are still confirming the exact number of attackers involved in the abduction. Police are withholding the names of the survivors for security reasons. Officers have registered a formal case. The investigation remains active as police look for the motive behind this violence.
