Shillong: Shillong marked the release of a new book honoring late four-time Chief Minister BB Lyngdoh. Speaker Thomas A. Sangma presented the text on September 10. Author Andrew Simons spent three years compiling the work. He edited speeches ranging from 1970 to 2003. This includes records from the provisional state government era.
Simons, the current Adviser (Legislation) and former Assembly Commissioner, wants to preserve state history. The book is titled B B Lyngdoh – A Tribute to the Visionary Leader and Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya Whose Ideals Continue to Inspire Generations. Copies head to libraries and colleges. It serves as a vital reference for researchers.
Speaker Sangma labeled Lyngdoh the father of coalition politics. He praised his ability to stabilize governments before anti-defection laws existed. The former leader championed cadastral surveys for land records. He also pushed for the creation of NEIGRIHMS.
Lyngdoh’s daughter, Syrpailin Khonglah, spoke on his core values. His guiding motto was "Health, Wealth and Education". She noted that he prioritized road connectivity to boost local economies. As Finance Minister, he pushed infrastructure projects. In 1990, he launched the MLA Scheme. He remains the first chief minister in India to implement this program. He also proposed an AIIMS-style health institute for the Northeast in 1980.
The launch event drew a large crowd. Attendees included Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V. Lyngdoh and MIDC Chairman Gavin Miguel Mylliem. Former legislators Martle N. Mukhim and Titostarwell Chyne joined them. Former Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and Padma Shri recipient Patricia Mukhim also attended. Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and others observed the proceedings.
