Mokokchung Photographers Urged to Build Careers Behind the Lens

Kohima: The Mokokchung Photography Club celebrated World Photography Day 2026 on Wednesday at the Mokokchung Municipal Council Conference Hall. The event focused on the theme Home. Guest of honor Imtiyapangla, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, challenged attendees to view photography as more than a hobby. It is a path to a real job.

She told the crowd to stop waiting for government work. Instead, she pushed youth to make money through weddings, events, portraiture, fashion, sports, real estate, tourism, stock photography, and cultural documentation. She urged established shooters to mentor the next generation. They need to build portfolios and master marketing to succeed. Imtiyapangla stated, "Photography as a vital tool for preserving heritage, documenting societal shifts, and safeguarding local culture."

Founding member Longrangty Longchar looked back at the club's history. It started in 2011 at the Mokokchung Press Club. He pointed to early projects like the matchbox-camera workshops and the Morung Camera showcase at the Moatsu festival. The event included a photo gallery exhibition and a mobile contest with 66 total entries.

Odichuba Ozukum from Sungkomen won the mobile competition. Akangkokba of Ungma Village took second, and Tekatemjen Walling of Süngratsü Village placed third. Sponsors for the contest included Block Development Officers Aienla Jamir, Er. Wainungla Walling, and Lanutemjen. Jurors for the event were Imcha Jamir from the Photography Club Dimapur, Canon Mentor Ashwini Barkataki, and Canon SSO Bondeep Khound.
