Guwahati: Tezpur University has secured the vintage camera collection of the late Nalini Kanta Baruah, a legendary photographer known as the Shutter Guru. Baruah’s son, Madhurjya Baruah, handed over the equipment during the Sobi Ghor exhibition on World Photography Day, August 19. The university’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism will house these pieces for education and display.
Baruah opened his studio, Photo Service, in 1957. He captured major events, including the Indo-China War. Students will study these cameras to track the jump from mechanical to digital technology. Dr. Manoj Deori, head of the journalism department, noted that the donation preserves state history. He stated, "The donation would help preserve an important part of Assam’s photographic history and make it accessible to students and future generations."
Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Amarendra Kumar Das led the event, joined by deans Manabendra Mandal and Chandan Kumar Sharma. The Sobi Ghor exhibition marked the 25th Silver Jubilee of the journalism department. The event theme focused on the concept of HOME.
