Kohima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged full central support to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on Thursday. He met five parliamentarians at Parliament House in New Delhi to address the mounting crisis from heavy rains and floods. The disaster has claimed lives and destroyed houses, crops, livestock, roads, and bridges since last month.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju led the delegation. Other members included Tapir Gao and Tai Tagak from Arunachal Pradesh, alongside S. Supongmeren Jamir and S. Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland. Except for Jamir, a Congress member, the group consists of BJP politicians. The team urged the Prime Minister to speed up the release of funds for urgent restoration work.
Modi took to his official X account following the session. He wrote, "Had a meeting with MPs from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. We talked about the situation in these states in the wake of floods there. The Central Government will keep working with the respective state Governments to address the challenges. Praying for everyone’s wellbeing and safety."
The Indian Air Force is currently running large-scale rescue missions in landslide-stricken Nagaland. They have evacuated over 300 civilians and are currently airlifting essential supplies to remote, road-cut districts. Recent aerial surveys in Arunachal Pradesh included Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Chouhan promised new homes for those displaced and compensation for agricultural losses.
Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu confirmed that both the Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation. The government aims to restore normalcy while developing long-term scientific strategies to mitigate future natural disasters.
