Kohima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with five Members of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on Thursday to address the devastation caused by ongoing floods. The meeting took place at Parliament House in New Delhi. Heavy rains have plagued the region since last month. Lives are lost. Infrastructure and crops remain damaged.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju led the delegation. Other attendees included Tapir Gao, Tai Tagak, S. Supongmeren Jamir, and S. Phangnon Konyak. Most of the group represents the BJP, except for Congress member S. Supongmeren Jamir. The Prime Minister pledged full federal assistance to the states.
Modi posted on X regarding the session, stating: "Had a meeting with MPs from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. We talked about the situation in these states in the wake of floods there. The Central Government will keep working with the respective state Governments to address the challenges. Praying for everyone's wellbeing and safety."
The Indian Air Force continues to run rescue operations in landslide-hit Nagaland. They have evacuated over 300 civilians to date. Aircraft are currently dropping supplies into remote districts where road networks have collapsed. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently joined Rijiju and Chief Minister Pema Khandu to survey the wreckage in Arunachal Pradesh. Chouhan promised new housing and compensation for lost livestock and farmland. Officials are now eyeing long-term, scientific strategies to manage future disasters.
