Mizoram Parties Shake Up Leadership Ahead of 2028 Elections

Aizawl: Mizoram's political parties are bracing for the 2028 assembly elections. The opposition Mizo National Front will hold its organisational elections after the 2028 polls. Party president Zoramthanga announced the schedule on Monday, September 14, in Aizawl. He maintains this follows the party's established practice. Zoramthanga appointed former deputy chief minister Tawnluia as working president. He named former home minister Lalchamliana and former legislator D Thangliana as vice presidents. He claims the changes will improve party efficiency.

Meanwhile, the ruling Zoram People's Movement is set for a leadership overhaul. Chief Minister Lalduhoma may replace current president Lalliansawta. Health issues affect both the president and senior vice-president W Chhuanawma. The party recently amended its constitution to allow the Chief Minister to hold an elected party office. Home Minister K Sapdanga says they are deciding on a new leader. "We are holding frequent meetings to decide on a new leadership," Sapdanga said. He remains focused on retaining power.

Sapdanga credits unity and grassroots work for their 2023 victory. He warns workers against leaking confidential information online. The government claims progress on infrastructure, including highway expansion and Aizawl road improvements. They removed 3,365 proxy government workers. Sapdanga also reports increased tourism and better areca nut smuggling control. He expects the public to grade the party's performance. "Party leaders and workers are the most important," he added.
