Zoramthanga Targets 2028 Election Return to Secure Mizoram Safeguards

Aizawl: Mizo National Front president Zoramthanga says his party must win the 2028 Assembly elections to lock in protections for the Mizo people. He spoke at the 46th Martyrs Day event in Aizawl on September 21. The party delayed the ceremony by one day because the original date fell on a Sunday.

Zoramthanga claims the current Zoram People Movement government is gutting critical safeguards linked to the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord. Specifically, he highlighted threats to Article 371(G) and the Inner Line Permit system. He vowed that the MNF would roll back these changes if they reclaim power. He also hit out at Chief Minister Lalduhoma for trying to downplay the party's history.

The MNF leader remains defiant. "The sacrifices of personnel of the Mizo National Army who fought and died during the movement could not be diminished or dismissed," he stated. He added that the Peace Accord grew from the combined sweat of the Church, political groups, NGOs, the public, and the Mizo National Army.

In Serchhip, MNF working president Tawnluia joined the attack on Lalduhoma. Tawnluia noted that the Mizo National Martyrs Memorial at Luangmual honors the movement's dead and those who battled the British long before the party existed. Looking ahead, the MNF plans to recruit younger candidates with deep ties to Mizo nationalism to run in the 2028 vote.
