Aizawl: Activist Sonam Wangchuk sat down with former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Monday. The pair met at Mizoram House in New Delhi for ninety minutes. They discussed regional politics, current events, and the mechanics of reconciliation. The Mizo National Front released details about the meeting this Wednesday.
Wangchuk wants to copy the Mizo success story. He is looking specifically at how the 1986 peace process unfolded. "I want to study the successful memorandum of settlement of Mizoram and understand more about the experiences of Zoramthanga, who played a key role in the Mizo Peace Accord," Wangchuk said.
Zoramthanga led the Mizo National Front during years of insurgency. He later served as the state's top leader. He told the activist that his state’s peace deal remains a gold standard for conflict resolution. They talked about the federal government’s role in bringing stubborn stakeholders to the table. Zoramthanga hopes his home state acts as a blueprint for other regions in need of stability. Wangchuk ended the meeting by asking the veteran politician to visit Ladakh.

Beyond the policy talk, Wangchuk signaled a deeper commitment to the project. He told the former chief minister he plans to travel to Mizoram to study the 1986 Memorandum of Settlement firsthand.
Zoramthanga highlighted his own political tenure during the meeting, noting his 36-year run as the head of the Mizo National Front. Wangchuk tipped his cap to that career, acknowledging the veteran leader's transition from the national movement to the state's top office.
