Itanagar Students Rally for Activist Sonam Wangchuk

Itanagar: Thousands of students and youths flooded Itanagar on July 20 to back climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. They held a peaceful mass rally and a one-day symbolic fast to support his hunger strike for Ladakh constitutional protections. The student group Youth for Change organized the event.

Crowds gathered at Akashdeep Complex at 11 am. They marched toward the Tennis Court at IG Park. The mood was defiant. Protesters shouted slogans against the reported forceful removal of Wangchuk to a hospital. They also blasted alleged pressure tactics meant to force him to break his fast.

Organizers emphasized the peaceful nature of the demonstration. Participants demanded constitutional safeguards for the region, stating the protest was "conducted peacefully and aimed at expressing solidarity with Wangchuk’s demand for constitutional safeguards and protection of Ladakh’s rights." The rally served as a direct challenge to the current state of affairs regarding his protest.
