Imphal: Manipur officials removed the principal of the Eklavya Model Residential School at the Zeikhuluang Loktak Project on August 3. The move follows claims of severe food shortages and failing living conditions at the tribal boarding school. Students reportedly went days without proper meals. Some children were seen crying while others required medical care for weakness. Social media footage purportedly showed students receiving treatment.
The Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution transferred the principal to the office of their Member Secretary. The directive overrides all previous orders. This school operates under a federal scheme meant to provide free education and board to tribal youth.
The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights intervened under Section 14 of the Child Rights Act of 2005. They launched a probe into reports that food stocks were inadequate for the number of students and staff. Staff allegedly skipped breakfast service when supplies ran dry. Parents pulled several children from the facility, fearing for their health. The Commission described the situation as a "matter as one affecting the rights, health and dignity of children."
The commission ordered the Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner and the Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills to inspect the site immediately. They must verify stock levels and restore access to clean water and healthcare. Officials have 48 hours to file a factual report and an Action Taken Report. Copies of the mandate went to the Director of Social Welfare and police superintendents in Churachandpur and Bishnupur. Students who left the hostel remain home until authorities certify the environment is safe.
