Imphal: Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen opened a new diagnostic centre at the century-old Kangpokpi Christian Hospital on Wednesday, November 4. This addition aims to cut down travel times for locals needing medical tests. The facility, locally known as Mission Hospital, started in 1920 under American Baptist missionary Dr. G.G. Crozier and his wife. It stands as one of the oldest Christian medical hubs in the Northeast.
Kipgen cut the ribbon and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the expansion. She told attendees that better testing is vital for patient care. "Improved diagnostic infrastructure was essential for strengthening healthcare delivery," she said. The centre will serve residents of Kangpokpi and nearby areas who previously traveled far for basic checkups.
Staff dedicated the centre to the late Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou. He was one of three church leaders murdered in an ambush on May 13. Police have yet to close the case on that attack. During the event, Kipgen promised the hospital management she would upgrade the road connecting the facility to the highway. This move intends to help patients and staff get to the grounds faster.
Kipgen toured the site with Medical Superintendent Dr. Thangjangul Khongsai. She was joined by officials including Joel G. Haokip and Thanggoulen Khongsai. Chaplain Rev. Lhoukholal Kipgen led the dedication service before the tour. The hospital has a long history of running dispensaries and leprosy care in the state.
