Imphal: Manipur’s Public Works Department detailed a sweeping overhaul of state infrastructure at a Meet the Press session in Imphal today. Officials briefed reporters on massive road, bridge, and building projects. The department manages nearly 10,000 kilometers of roads and 100 bridges. They aim to boost socio-economic growth.
Ch. Uttam Singh led the briefing alongside Dr. Ng. Senior, Ajmida Sahani, Th. Komol Singh, and L. Vivek Roy. They utilize various funding streams including CRIF, NABARD, and the NEC. Work spans the State Budget, deposit projects, and externally aided initiatives.
Fifteen road projects from the 2020-21 fiscal year are mostly done. Four bridges under the Setu Bandhan scheme are moving fast. Officials also highlighted the SASCI program. This covers 100 kilometers of rigid pavement across 11 district headquarters for Rs. 174.59 crore. Ten hostels for working women are also underway for Rs. 149 crore. Since February 2026, the government has greenlit 321 projects across all 60 Assembly Constituencies costing Rs. 319.75 crore.
The department maintains 292.64 kilometers of National Highways. Crews are active on NH-137A, NH-102A, NH-02, NH-37, NH-202, and NH-102. NEC funds are bankrolling an International Convention Centre at Keikol for Rs. 166.87 crore. Other active sites include a Forensic Laboratory at Pangei, a Sports Complex at Kangpokpi, and a court building in Churachandpur.
A massive urban upgrade, the MURDAMIP, targets Greater Imphal. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is funding the Rs. 3,647 crore project. It fixes 547.28 kilometers of road across 135.29 square kilometers. Construction hits 16 Assembly Constituencies. Engineers are replacing damaged surfaces with concrete designed to last 30 years. They are also building new drains and walkways.
The state is turning to modern tech. Officials will use artificial intelligence, drones, and GIS to track maintenance needs. Uttam Singh noted, "The Public Works Department is undertaking extensive road, bridge and infrastructure development works throughout Manipur to strengthen connectivity, improve public infrastructure and accelerate socio-economic development."
