Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh launched a state-level anti-narcotics drive on Sunday, August 2. He spoke at the auditorium of Manipur University. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the nationwide "Nasha Mukta Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyaan" via a virtual link from New Delhi. Organizers included the Manipur University NSS Cell and the state branch of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Modi called for a healthy, sober generation to build a developed nation. Khemchand Singh told the crowd that "the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 can only be realised with a healthy, disciplined and drug-free youth." He spoke from personal experience. He chose to avoid narcotics in his youth to pursue public service. Now, he wants the next generation to do the same.
Drugs are a major threat. Khemchand Singh warned that NGOs have identified organized networks feeding substances to young people. He promised a tougher crackdown on traffickers. Peace is just as important. The Chief Minister urged all communities to bridge trust gaps after three years of crisis, promising justice for violence and better movement across the state.
Economic expansion remains the long-term goal. Manipur is key to the Act East Policy. The state must become a gateway to Southeast Asia. Rail lines reaching Imphal by December 2028 will open trade routes to Moreh. Khemchand Singh warned that these massive gains will fail if the youth are sidelined by addiction.
University Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh and Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh also attended the event. Faculty, students, and volunteers took a formal pledge to fight substance abuse. The Vice-Chancellor tasked the students with becoming anti-drug ambassadors in their own neighborhoods.
