Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Andro on July 27 to inaugurate a new Ima Market and two bridges spanning the Thoubal River. The bridges, located at Khungdongbam Mapa (MN04115) and Wangkhem Siphai Leikai (MN04116), aim to bolster connectivity and local trade. Andro MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar joined the Chief Minister for the ceremonies.
Singh announced a Rs 10 crore allocation for improving inter-village roads. He also promised to build a dedicated Municipal Council office for the constituency. Local groups submitted requests for more infrastructure, including retaining walls and primary school teachers. Attendees included Deputy Commissioner Lairenlakpam Nivedita and Planning Department officials.
Andro remains a cultural landmark. It hosts a centuries-old ritual fire and ranks among Asia’s oldest settlements. Research visitors frequently travel there. The Chief Minister touted the market as a catalyst for economic growth. “The new market is expected to boost trade and business activities, strengthen the local market ecosystem, provide better opportunities for vendors and producers, and enhance convenience for the public.”
Development work in the region stalled recently. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays. The ongoing ethnic conflict further complicated matters. Violent unrest has scarred the state for three years. It damaged the economy and local education. Singh urged communities in both the hills and the valley to rebuild the harmony that existed before May 3, 2023.
