Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh officially opened the new Ima Market and two bridges in the Andro Assembly Constituency on July 27. He arrived alongside MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar to mark the occasion. The new bridges span the Thoubal River at Khungdongbam Mapa, identified as MN04115, and Wangkhem Siphai Leikai, marked as MN04116.
This is his second visit to the region since taking office. The CM emphasized that these infrastructure gains are vital for the area. He pledged 10 crore rupees for local road improvements. He also promised a dedicated office for the Andro Municipal Council. Local groups and youth clubs submitted formal requests for retaining walls and more primary school teachers.
The CM focused on the economic potential of the new site. He expects the project to jumpstart local commerce. “The new market is expected to boost trade and business activities, strengthen the local market ecosystem, provide better opportunities for vendors and producers, and enhance convenience for the public. It will also help expand the market reach of Andro’s local products, contributing to sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods,” Singh said.
Andro holds deep historical and cultural value. It is one of Asia's oldest settlements. The area is famous for a unique natural fire phenomenon that draws researchers from across the globe. MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar noted that development stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent ethnic tensions. He expects work to speed up now.
The Chief Minister addressed the state's ongoing ethnic conflict. It has gripped the region for nearly three years. He called for harmony between hill and valley communities. Peace is the only path forward. He hopes to restore the unity that existed before May 3, 2023.
