Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh rallied young people to reject narcotics on Sunday, August 2, during the state-level launch of the Nasha Mukta Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyaan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the nationwide campaign via a virtual address from New Delhi. The event, hosted at the Manipur University auditorium, was organized by the university's NSS Cell in partnership with the State NSS Cell and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The Prime Minister stated that achieving a developed India requires youth who remain physically and mentally fit. He urged the country to steer clear of destructive habits. Modi called for nationwide participation in the movement. Khemchand Singh echoed this sentiment while speaking to the crowd in Imphal. The Chief Minister declared that the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 depends on a healthy and disciplined generation.
He warned of organized networks targeting young people with drugs. The Chief Minister cited personal experience to encourage better choices. "I had consciously stayed away from narcotic substances, enabling him to devote himself to public service," Khemchand said while urging students to become responsible citizens. He promised the state would ramp up its crackdown on trafficking rings.
Beyond drugs, the Chief Minister addressed the state's economic future. He pointed to the Act East Policy, which positions Manipur as a gateway to Southeast Asia. The government plans to finish railway connectivity to Imphal by December 2028. This line will boost trade toward Moreh and beyond. However, he noted these gains require a drug-free workforce. The state also faces a social crisis. Khemchand appealed to all communities to restore peace and rebuild trust after three years of unrest. He vowed to pursue justice for violence and restore secure travel. Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh, Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, faculty, and students finished the session by taking a pledge for a drug-free India.
