Imphal: Manipur officials want the state to be the country's premier sports capital. Youth Affairs and Sports Director Mayengbam Veto Singh launched the Vision 2030 blueprint on Friday in Imphal. The plan aims to merge tourism with athletic growth. Manipur holds a deep sporting pedigree. It has produced 19 Olympians, 26 Asian Games medalists, and 36 Commonwealth Games medalists.
The state currently manages over 40 active disciplines. Singh is calling on global investors to help fix persistent development issues. The state faces funding constraints, infrastructure gaps in hill districts, and connectivity bottlenecks. Officials want to lean on the region's varied terrain and local sporting culture to drive change. The roadmap targets specific sports like boxing, football, weightlifting, hockey, and combat arts.
Preserving history remains a priority. The department seeks to protect traditional activities like Sagol Kangjei, Mukna, Thang-Ta, and Yubi Lakpi. "The roadmap aims to develop the state as a hub for sports, tourism, and athletic development," Singh noted during the briefing. Plans include using more sports science, better nutrition, and performance analytics to close resource gaps. They also plan to lean on public-private partnerships.
Senior department officials joined the announcement. These included Senior FO M. Nabakumar Singh, Deputy Director Th. Mangichan Singh, Assistant Director T. Dushanta Singh, and Olympian K. Chinglensana.
