Imphal: Football fever hit Manipur on Wednesday as the 135th Durand Cup trophy tour kicked off a state-wide celebration. The Durand Cup, President’s Cup, and Simla Trophy arrived in Imphal, signaling the return of Asia’s oldest football tournament to the region.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam flagged off the procession at Sendra View Point, overlooking Loktak Lake. Accompanied by the Thangjing Riders, the trophies traveled through Moirang, Bishnupur, Tiddim Ground, Kangla Fort, and Manipur University. Crowds lined the route to welcome the convoy.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla later unveiled the trophies at the City Convention Centre. He addressed the crowd with a clear message. "It is a catalyst for hope and renewal. The roar of our football-loving crowds can achieve what few policy initiatives alone can accomplish. It heals, builds bridges, strengthens communities and unites people," he said.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, alongside civil and military leaders, joined the event. Attendees included Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh, and DGP Mukesh Singh. Military brass, including Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, were also present to mark the occasion.
The state honored several local icons. Weightlifter Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi, boxer Laishram Sarita Devi, archer Laishram Bombayla Devi, and footballer Oinam Bembem Devi received formal recognition. Major General Shubhankar Basu and Inspector General Assam Rifles Maj Gen Gaurav Sharma also represented the armed forces.
Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh noted the state’s massive impact on the sport. Nearly 80 Manipuris have played in the Indian Super League. About 20 have played internationally.
The Khuman Lampak Main Stadium will host Group D matches from July 28 to August 17. The lineup includes NEROCA FC, TRAU FC, the Indian Navy Football Team, and debutants FC Raengdai. One quarter-final will also take place in Imphal. While the state celebrates, Home Minister Konthoujam briefly addressed a fire at an Army camp in Senapati district, noting reports link it to a recent ambush in Nagaland.
