Imphal: The 135th IndianOil Durand Cup hit Imphal with a bang. Kangla Warriors edged out Sangai Strikers 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a tense, scoreless draw at the SAI Ground. The exhibition match served as a curtain raiser for Asia's oldest football tournament.
Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam attended as the chief guest. He was joined by Major General Shubhankar Basu, the General Officer Commanding of the Red Shield Division, plus various civil and military leaders. The event highlighted Manipur’s deep roots in the sport.
Organizers took time to celebrate 20 Super 50 students from Bishnupur who crushed the NEET and JEE exams. The Indian Army, the National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation, and the State Bank of India supported their studies. Beyond the pitch, the crowd enjoyed a Pipe Band display, the Durand Cup anthem, and cultural performances.
Minister Konthoujam met the players before taking the ceremonial kick-off. The winners walked away with a trophy, medals, and a ₹50,000 cash prize. The Sangai Strikers earned the runner-up trophy and ₹40,000. Officials also put the iconic Durand Cup trophies on display for the fans. Excitement is high. Organizers said the event "celebrated Manipur's rich footballing heritage" while looking ahead to the main tournament.
The action moves next to the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium. An opening ceremony will kick off the Imphal chapter. TRAU FC and NEROCA FC will face off in the first official tournament fixture.
