Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi wants Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to rethink how Jorhat ranks under the UNNATI 2024 industrial scheme. He sent a letter on August 21 arguing that the current Zone A status hurts the district. Nearby districts sit in Zone B. This split could drive investors away from local projects.
Gogoi claims local entrepreneurs and traders fear the current rules will stall growth. He wants more transparency on how officials sort districts. The MP also pushed for an extension on the UNNATI registration deadline to help businesses that missed the initial window. He wants a level playing field. Industry needs stability.
The district faces a severe lack of skilled labor. Technical and vocational jobs go unfilled because locals lack the right training. To fix this, Gogoi proposed a new vocational centre built with help from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. It would offer courses in repair services, hospitality, and food processing.
He also pushed for more MSME workshops covering digital commerce, finance, and Udyam Registration. He wants these programs to link local goods to bigger markets. He remains optimistic about the district's potential. "With the right policies, support and opportunities, Jorhat can emerge as a strong hub for investment, employment and industrial development in Upper Assam," Gogoi said in a social media post on Monday.
