Imphal: The third DGAR Hockey Tournament opened September 18 at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal. Assam Rifles and Manipur Hockey teamed up to host the event. It runs through September 28. Officials want to push unity and discipline among local youth.
Retired Lieutenant General Konsam Himalay Singh served as chief guest. He praised the organizers for moving forward despite the state's current instability. Singh told the crowd, "Sporting events such as the hockey tournament can help nurture sporting spirit while also contributing to peace and unity."
He pointed to the state's long history with the sport, citing the indigenous game of Kangjei or Sagol Kangjei. Manipur has produced many players for international competition and the Olympic Games. He pushed the athletes to give their best.
Ten teams are battling in the men's bracket. Five teams represent the women's side. The winner takes home one lakh rupees. The runner-up nets 75,000 rupees. This year also features a new running trophy. Senior leaders from the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and other guests attended the opening ceremony.
