Imphal: Manipur officials pushed their higher education agenda today at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal. The Directorate of University and Higher Education detailed major shifts under the National Education Policy 2020. They are focused on growing colleges across the state.
Director L. Radhakanta confirmed that 51 government and aided colleges now host the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme. This includes multidisciplinary classes and multiple entry options. Twenty-five schools now offer Honours tracks, with six of those adding a research component. Radhakanta said, "The State has 51 Government and Government-aided colleges providing undergraduate education."
Staffing remains a bottleneck. Out of 2,376 sanctioned teaching jobs, 785 sit empty. The Manipur Public Service Commission is currently processing 430 hires for Assistant Professor roles. Officials also cleared 225 more spots to fill those gaps.
The state is changing how it trains teachers. Stand-alone B.Ed. colleges will disappear by 2030. They will swap those for the Integrated Teacher Education Programme. Some colleges should start this by the 2028-29 school year, provided they get the green light from the National Council for Teacher Education.
Construction is moving fast. Twenty colleges finished major work under the College Development Mission. Another 14 schools enter the rotation next. The government set aside 50 crore rupees for these improvements. Future plans include biometric attendance tracking and sharing labs and staff across college clusters to boost autonomy.
