Kohima: Ward No. 13 Council in Lower Chandmari, Kohima, is fed up. Leaders and the youth executive demanded action on September 8 to clear out junk cars and trash. A joint inspection revealed abandoned vehicles sitting on roadsides for years. These wrecks narrow the streets. Traffic clogs during peak hours because of this. Ward GB Hoshito Assumi said: "The ward said indiscriminate parking near homes, shops and intersections was narrowing roads, forcing vehicles into opposing lanes and contributing to congestion, particularly during peak hours."
The council wants a survey of every abandoned rig. They plan to tag these vehicles and force owners to move them. If owners fail to act, the council wants towing enforced at major choke points. The situation is a mess. Stagnant water gathers around these parked shells. Clogged drains have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, raising the risk of vector-borne diseases.
A cleanup plan is now underway. Ward volunteers, ASHA workers, and municipal staff will target trash and organic waste. The council is partnering with the Kohima Municipal Council, the Health Department, and traffic police to install signs and enforce penalties. They are setting up a grievance system for neighbors to report illegal parking or dumping. Residents must keep construction debris off the streets and clear their own footpaths. Leaders expect every resident to help keep public spaces clean.
