Kohima Mandates Waste Segregation at Source

Kohima: Kohima Municipal Council is forcing residents to sort their trash. CEO Alemyapang Longchar declared on October 12 that waste segregation at the source is now mandatory. Garbage trucks will refuse to haul away any unsegregated loads. This shift aims to slash the city's reliance on overflowing landfills.

Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem chaired the review meeting at his office. Officials from the Urban Development, Rural Development, and PHED departments attended to hammer out the plan. The city intends to tighten up operations by setting designated collection points and fixed pickup schedules. KMC is already running outreach programs in wards to drum up community support and ensure folks follow the new rules.

Data remains a sticking point. Longchar pushed for better oversight, stating the need for "accurate digital reporting and timely updating of data on the centralised online portal." He wants dedicated staff on the ground to track sanitation progress and keep local bodies compliant through technical training.

The district still faces hurdles. Officials pointed to weak processing infrastructure, budget limitations, and poor coordination as major roadblocks to success. Buchem suggested a workshop with expert speakers to bridge these gaps. He believes a focused meeting between departments will lead to practical solutions and better accountability for waste generators across the district.
