Crews Clear Decade-Old Blockage at Kohima War Cemetery Drain

Kohima: A 450-metre drain next to the Kohima War Cemetery finally flows again. Crews cleared the massive blockage after ten years of neglect. The operation took three days to complete. It required a team of district officials, PWD workers, local Midland Colony residents, and firefighters.

Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem inspected the site on September 28. The long-term clog forced overflow onto the roads and pushed water toward the New Market area. Work began only after officials held a series of meetings with stakeholders to map out the cleanup. Contractors and volunteers joined forces to rip out utility pipes and debris clogging the path.

Buchem praised the residents for their help. During the inspection, Buchem said, "The prolonged blockage had caused water to overflow onto the road and flow towards the New Market area."

Officials now want a strict maintenance schedule. They warned residents to stop dumping food packets and plastic waste into the gutters. Buchem told the public to use dustbins to keep the drainage system clear. Everyone must take responsibility to stop the pipes from choking again.
